Beneficial Use | Anise oil can be used for the treatment of respiratory complaints, mainly as an expectorant in cough associated with cold. A single dose of anise oil is 50–200 μL, three times daily, but it should not be taken for more than two weeks. Its use in children and adolescents under 18 years of age is contraindicated because of the lack of data and the presence of estragole. Persons with known sensitivity to anethole should avoid anise and its oil. Caution / Warnings | Preparations containing the EO or alcoholic extracts should not be used during pregnancy and lactation because mild oestrogenic activity and the antifertility effects of anethole have been demonstrated in rats. [S. K. Dhar. Indian J. Physiol. Pharmacol. 1995, 39, 63.] Allergic reactions affecting the skin or the respiratory system may occur, but their frequency is not known.
